Chanting Practices

1. Chanting- What does it mean?

Chanting is the repetition of a name, a mantra, often derived from sacred scriptures. We can call it as devotional as well as spiritual practice, aimed at calming the mind, purifying the heart and aligning the individual with the divine vibrations.

Srimad Bhagavad Gita 10.25 says,

“Yajñānāṁ japa-yajño’smi”
“Among all sacrifices, I am the sacrifice of chanting (japa).”
Lord Krishna emphasizes Japa as the highest form of spiritual offering.

2. Types of Chanting according to Scriptures

  • Vaidic Chanting – Based on the recitation of Vedas with strict rules of swara (tone) and intonation (Vaidic Japa)

  • Nama Chanting – Repetition of divine names like “Om Namah Shivaya”, “Ram Ram”, “Hare Krishna” (Nama Japa)

  • Mantra Chanting – Repeating bija mantras or Vedic mantras (e.g., Gayatri Mantra, Mahamrityunjaya Mantra) (Mantra Japa)

  • Kirtan or Bhajan – Musical and community-based devotional chanting.

“Harināma Harināma Harināma eva kevalam” – Kali-Santarana Upanishad
“In the age of Kali, there is no other way to liberation than chanting the holy names of Hari.”

3. Spiritual Benefits of Chanting

  • Cleanses the mind and emotions

  • Activates the chakras and inner pranic energy

  • Improves focus, memory, and calmness

  • Connects the subject with divine vibrations

  • Burns karmic impressions accumulated through ages (samskaras)

Hare is the internal potency of Lord, who is none other than Srimati Radharani. This is a very powerful mantra, which you should incorporate into you day-to-day life.
